Parental Illusions

Gary Beck

In every man
the little part, still boy,
holds desperate illusions
however base,
that once, in youth,
loved and cherished
by a father’s strength,
a mother’s soft caress,
there was a citadel
to nurse one's wounds.
This tiny place of roots
though puny, fickle refuge,
haven in despair,
held puissant awe
until demanded.
Then locking one out
(temple doors denying the defiler)
that self of need
wove strange, unreal myths
remembered as the past.
