Mother's Milk

Anne Britting Oleson

Turn left.  Look hard.
That woman who stands
in the dairy aisle,
studying the milk labels,
reaching for the cheap gallon
for your morning's cereal.
In her sturdy coat
and shoes, neither new
this winter, her hair
gone gray at the roots:
that woman could be
your mother, just as
she could be mine.
Hands red and sore,
forehead creased,
always, balancing budgets--
there's never enough money—
and time—there's never
enough of that, either.
She puts the milk
in the cart, moves on,
slowly.  Do you see her?
Does your patience strain
with the love of her?
