Midnight Hospital

It becomes a composition
or question to figure out
after we have gone to bed
and had coffee in the morning.
Her body, like a dancer’s,
sickled and broken
in the most exhausted way.
Hands run to her mouth
to reach her throat
and fold like a moth,
buzzing like a two liter of tinfoil
and toilet cleaner,
bottles made scream in the woods.
Doctor drew a ribbon tonight
and all I could think of
was the weathervane,
the no smoking sign,
dogs barking like they didn’t
know how to be silent,
or knew how to be silent
but understood we needed this.
We sent the collar back
or held on to it and tried
to find a way to crawl through.
I forget which.
