Life Over Breakfast

Spring Poetry Contest - Top Ten Finalist
Mary Kay Knief

I sometimes dream
of my long-gone mother,
who was always busy
denying her own roots.
She could do anything;
still she criticized herself
and everyone else, too.
In my dream, we drive separately,
sit opposite in a diner booth.

I once wished for
mother-daughter friendship,
like some girls claim –
that I had been allowed to
talk things out instead of
taking cover in a book.
Her unhappiness spread,
stuck, like the maple syrup
on our faded Melamine plates.

She made beautiful costumes
to improve me, along with
dance and music lessons.
My blond curls her art,
like my handmade clothes.
Over eggs and bacon,
we sit here.

We try – beyond the strain –
to remember good times
but recall only pain.
She thinks I hate her –
I know she hates me.
Cutting words from the past
come to mind.
Finally, we call a truce –
just long enough to eat
our tear-splashed breakfasts.
