to be LARGE again

by Chelsea Donahue

I am small in other people’s worlds –
dressed in gray at their parties, with
shy lips and a wild mind

I cry only in dreams and smile on their patios
blowing smoke up at the last hint of moonlight
reminding myself,
like you, it was once here,
luminescent and pulsing

At twenty-seven,
I now know when a party is coming to an end,
it throbs, it thrives,
then quietly simmers,
(and I tell myself I will be alright)

I dream to see myself in your eyes once more,
to be large again, breathing in color,
illuminated by night
(and I tell myself I will be alright)
